Minimalism’s true definition can sometimes be skewed by stereotypes, but like Sustainable Fashion, it too has been adopted by many individuals. This documentary Minimalism: a Documentary about the Important Things recently went on Netflix and I watched it as soon as I could. I had been hoping it would go on Netflix when I first discovered the film through my personal/school-related research into minimalism and over-consumption.
This documentary was created by two men known as The Minimalists (a.k.a. Joshua Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus). They’ve written a few books, and the documentary follows the two friends through their book tour of their first novel Everything That Remains: A Memoir and their journey to fame.
I thought that the film was very well done, it was heartfelt but still kept true to two friends having fun and trying to get their message out. The documentary also included Graham Hill and other individuals who went the tiny home route instead of buying a bunch of stuff that they didn’t really need.
It really makes you question what really is important, and with this idea of minimalism growing it has become easier for any individual no matter how much money you make or how big your family is to be able to adopt this lifestyle and lead a more value and relationship-oriented life.
I myself, took an interest in de-cluttering and only keeping the possessions that really bring joy to me, like anyone it was a process and one that still continues today, but after my own battle with depression and this discovery of minimalism it has definitely helped in making me happier and not so stressed out all the time.
This film I thought was so unique and interesting to watch and is for anyone that has started to recognize the issues with over-consumption in our modern western society, or simply would like a starting point about minimalism.
